Excellent video. Despite shomen uchi technique is different, Tomiki Sensei is really good. Every discipline changes in time and aikido is not the different. Because we do not know why or for whom this movie was taken, we can't understand the backround. Thank you for sharing!

When i start pushing my fist toward someone's face, a lot of times their initial response is "I'm being punched, i need to grab this fist before it hits me." And from that response, you can go from there. In my dojo, we try not to wait for the uke to grab: we initiate that forces the uke to respond because they believe they are under attack. If they don't grab or block or make contact with that hand, it'll go ahead and strike them; if they do grab/block, technique follows.
