Jazz is improvisation based on the rhythm and chord structures which are underlying and constant.

Man, honestly: either you understand jazz or you dont, dont try to reationalize it. If you played an instrument maybe you could get to apreciate more its complexity. And if you do play something, then get much closer to playing this genre. Jazz itself is about going out of the limits, improvising every note and evolve ephimerely.

Metheny and Bona solos are full of Rythmical concepts and great melodic choices. But to understand it you got to have a well trained ear and maybe you must transcribe that. You will see what kind of wonderful things they put in their solos.

I wish I could but I just don't get this jazz stuff. Oh I can see that the protagonists are technically accomplished, but while the notes played aren't entirely random I just don't see the point. It just meanders along without any obvious direction, without any obvious point. What emotion is this supposed to engender? Boredom??(... Take three steps back and prepare for sharp exit once it all kicks off...)
