Why do we do science? Beyond altruistic and self-aggrandizing motivations, many of our best scientists work long hours seeking the electric thrill that comes only from learning something that nobody knew before. The Pleasure of Finding Things Out, a collection of previously unpublished or difficult-to-find short works by maverick physicist Richard Feynman, takes its title from his own answer. From TV interview transcripts to his acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize, we see his quick, sharp wit, his devotion to his work, and his unwillingness to bow to social pressure or convention. It's no wonder he was only grudgingly admired by the establishment during his lifetime--read his "Minority Report to the Space Shuttle Challenger Inquiry" to see him blowing off political considerations as impediments to finding the truth.Richard P. Feynman (1918-1988), scientist, teacher, raconteur, and musician. He assisted in the development of the atomic bomb, expanded the understanding of quantum electrodynamics, translated Mayan hieroglyphics, and cut to the heart of the Challenger disaster. But beyond all of that, Richard Feynman was a unique and multi-faceted individual.THE PLEASURE OF FINDING THINGS OUT was filmed in 1981 and will delight and inspire anyone who would like to share something of the joys of scientific discovery. Feynman is a master storyteller, and his tales -- about childhood, Los Alamos and the Bomb, or how he won a Nobel Prize -- are a vivid and entertaining insight into the mind of a great scientist at work and play. visit: http://www.soulcravings.net for more vidsBUY THE DVD: http://www.sykes.easynet.co.uk...

[The following is a test - please disregard if it posts]For anyone who'd like to hear Feynman talking about something other than physics, Click on "Los Alamos From Below - RP Feynman" and listen away. It's classic Feynman talking about his experiences at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project and all the fun he had along the way. He talks about everything from his meeting with the great Neils Bohr to his wife driving the censorship team crazy with his letters to his wife.

I worship no one. Again, you make assumptions. If, by "hero", you imply somebody who gives of themselves selflessly to either aid or better mankind, then yes he certainly qualifies. The course of history attests that "heroes", like all mortal men, have dark deeds in their lives right alongside that which makes them "heroes". Feynman was no exception.Show me a "hero" who has not done great wrongs, and I'll show you a human being you know nothing of.

I cannot for the life of me imagine that any Jewish guy in 1940's would be impelled to work on a weapon which would assure the defeat of Nazism and the genocide they were committing at the time. Not only did they butcher Jewish people all over Europe but they did it to Serbs, Gypsies, the mentally ill and the physically handicapped too. Oh, and let's not forget homosexuals. The crime was in using the bomb on an already defeated Japan and that was done by politicians and military hawks.

You need a break. So, what do you suggest? People like him were working for the US govt at a time when he was needed. That was a bad time for US and it is lucky that he did contribute. Just like you are against him (I do not know whom you like), we are for people like him. We like him for everything from his creativity to his patriotism. After you do anything close to his work, come back and speak.

the guy was brilliant, i'm not disputing that. i concur that if germany were to have developed the bomb 'the world would have been doomed.' but please, continue your hero worship.

You're an idiot. The original motivation to create the bomb was the fear that Hitler might create such a weapon first. Had that happened, the world would have been doomed. In hindsight, we know that Germany didn't build that bomb, but that's hindsight. Don't be overly simplistic in your thinking. Things are more complicated in real life.
