Complete video at: http://fora.tv/fora/showthread... author and Global Business Network co-founder Peter Schwartz discusses global warming, arguing that the most likely scenario is also the most dangerous - an abrupt climate change over a period of a few decades.-----The Long Now Foundation presents a discussion between Peter Schwartz and Ralph Cavanagh: Nuclear Power, Climate Change and the Next 10,000 YearsIt is the threat of "abrupt climate change" that converted him to support new emphasis on nuclear power, Schwartz said. Gradual global warming is clearly now under way, and there is increasing reason to believe that human activity is driving it, mostly through the burning of coal and oil. If warming is all that happens, it will be an enormous problem, but some regions of the Earth would gain (Russia, Canada) while many others would lose.In the event of abrupt climate change, though, everyone loses. The most likely change would be a sudden (in one decade) shift to a much colder, drier, and windier world. The world's carrying capacity for humans would plummet, driving human population from the current 6.5 billion to as low as 2 billion, with most of the losses from war. It would be a civilization-threatening catastrophe. From research Schwartz has led for the Pentagon as well as from his own training in fluid dynamics, he thinks that continuation of the current warming is very likely to trigger the kind of radical climate instability that has been the norm in Earth's past, except for the last 10,000 years of uncharacteristically stable climate. Therefore everything must be done to head off the shift to climate instability.Meanwhile, Schwartz said, world demand for energy will continue to grow for decades, as two billion more people climb out of poverty and developing nations become fully developed economies. China and India alone will double or quadruple their energy use over the next 50 years. We will run out of oil in that period. That leaves coal or nuclear for electricity. Conservation is crucial, but it doesn't generate power. Renewables must grow fast, but they cannot hope to fill the whole need. Nuclear technology has improved its efficiency and safety and can improve a lot more. Reprocessing fuel will add further efficiency - Stewart Brand, The Long Now Foundation

**Here's a dime: go buy yourself a spell-checker and a clue.**If anything I need to replace this $5 Keyooard from Walmart.p.s. I prefer Stratego, and board games cost $10 now

Man made co2 isnt warming the planet... even if we could double the ammounts of co2 in the atmosphere (which is mostly natural co2)we'd be lucky to se 1 degree of temperature rise... Sunspot cycles drive the climate on Earth NOT co2!....it woulderfull how these global warming madmen try and blame everything on global warming...
TheRealArchAngel (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
**OMG we're all going to die from a global Meltdown...blah,blah, the Polar Bears and baby seals are doom, blah blah***Bears are Bears and the"Polar Bear adapted to living up there...and they like the taste of human flesh...soSeals live everywhere and the Poles are a seasonal spotThe Mini-Ice age happen when too much fresh water fucked up the sea currents bringing warm tropical waters tothe poles and the cold waters to the tropicsThe hot/colt exchange melts the pole back or "icecube earth"
TheRealArchAngel (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
**Man made global warming is melting the Polar Ice,blah, blah, blah)down with Bush and Oil companies and Walmart)**UmCO2 being a refrigerant & burning fossil fuels not creating Co2 aside, hotter air doesn't make Ice melt faster which is why back before Refrigeration Chesapeake bay Ice was shipped from Bahamas to Jamaica, to India with same "acceptable loss"Warmer Ocean Currents melt Ice faster, and only a hotter heat source and/or darker Oceans can result in warmer waters via IR absorption

**magical IR rays bounce upand down to vibrate magical GHG that warm the air blah,blah,yadda,yadda**NO1) Sunlight comesin and heats the surface of the Earth and IR either is absorbed or reflected by the surface ONCE2) the Heat from the surface "sticks" to the air above it based on "humidity", HOt air rises cold air falls, the difference makes "wind"3) Water evaporates out of the Oceans/surface with heat(make clouds)this precipitation along with different hot/cold air pockes make "weather"
TheRealArchAngel (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
**Mid Air" isn't sense enough to reflect IR**More importantly the IR absorption rate of gases known as "Green House Gases" focuses on in what is known as "Dry Air" in our atmosphere is, in the real world, negligible. The real world IR rates of gas in "Air" is CO2 1.4f by volume,Nitrogen 1.4F,Oxygen 1.3f, Argon 1.6f,Nitrous Oxide 15f,Methane 1.4f, & Water vapor at 32f-140f based on "humidity" ranging from 1%- 5.5% by volume of Lower troposphere Atmosphere due to evaporation/precipitation
TheRealArchAngel (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
**more GHG makes warmer Air cause more of it makes ir absorb more IR rays magically flying by**This is wrong cause1) The Heat Source, the sun hasn'tchanged and saying doubling a mass in volume can asorb more heat and make thinks hotter without changing the heat source tempature (the sun) is like saying you can bake 2 dozen cookies faster then 1 and they willcook as if in a hotter oven2) Infared rays either are absorbed or reflected by surfaces 1x and "Mid Air" isn't sense enough to reflect
TheRealArchAngel (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
**3)Doubling a mass drops IR absorption rate**This oneisjust hilarious...much as the Environuts thinking IR rays bounces around like a fricken Microwave and Magical "Green House Gases" vibrate like food in a microwave and IR rays can magically bounce around off the earth surface and mid air many times to "vibrate" the magical "GHG" a number of times until the air reaches a certain tempoature...and more GHG makes warmer Air cause more of it makes ir absorb more IR rays magically flying by...lol
