From what I remember from my readings about this piece, Barber never had the intention to write an elegy or funeral music althought it sounds like it. It became, to the peolpe, funeral music when it was played at F.D. Roosevelt's funeral. Musically speaking, the adagio is so close to stellar perfection. It is probably why it moves people so much. To take such a simple cantilena and stretch it for so long while never becoming boring is the mark of a great composer and orchestrator. |
